– Tried to encourage three big stars to sign for Liverpool

Steven Gerrard reportedly used to text players on Liverpool’s wishlist.

The former captain made 710 appearances for the Reds over 17 seasons and is regarded as a club legend.

AND: During his career when Liverpool were not challenging for domestic and European titles, Stevie G. was their biggest draw.

ESPN report that Gerrard would text players who the Reds wanted to sign. The players named were Toni Kroos, Willian and Alexis Sanchez.

Things are a lot different these days under manager Jurgen Klopp, sporting director Michael Edwards and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon.

– Stability

In a market where many of the game’s chief forces like Real, Bayern, Barcelona and Man United have to spend considerably to reconstruct their squads, the Merseysiders have prioritised a policy of retention.

As one source explained to ESPN FC:

– Those clubs would happily trade places with Liverpool. We have stability at a time when so much is left up in the air around Europe, especially with regards to the future of some big players [Neymar and Paul Pogba to name just two], which makes the landscape volatile, he said.
